we played a giant chess game on saturday, october 18 in san francisco's mission district. two chess champions, liina vark and charles gelman, played an exciting exhibition match, while humans playing the roles of pieces haunted various bars, cafes, and street corners corresponding to the squares on the chess board. when liina or charles made a move; gretchen, dave or sharilyn called the piece on his/her cellphone. we gave them a map coordinate for their move; they biked, skated, or motored to the appropriate section of the board.
the gameboard in san francisco was unusually large and steep. rooks, bishops, knights and especially queens were encouraged to bring bikes, skateboards, or other locomotive assistance. the afterparty took place at the 500 club on 17th and guererro (square d6).
